Transfer Program and Student Mobility

Transfer Program

Undergraduate transfer programs (also referred to as “2+2”/”3+2” programs) represent a very successful collaboration between the UBC Faculty of Forestry and several Chinese forestry universities. Formal cooperation agreements with Nanjing Forestry University, Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University, Beijing Forestry University, and Zhejiang Agricultural and Forestry University have been approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE, China). These transfer programs involve two or three years of post-secondary education in China, followed by program completion at UBC. Successful graduates receive a UBC degree. Students in these programs join one of the Bachelor of Science degree programs at UBC in Forestry, Wood Products Processing, Forest Sciences, and Natural Resources Conservation. Considerable interest has been expressed with respect to formalizing a transfer arrangement with UBC’s new Urban Forestry program.

Vancouver Summer Program

The VSP is a 4-week academic program offered by various Faculties and Schools within UBC. The VSP was launched in 2013 in the Faculty of Forestry to provide foreign (primarily Chinese) students with a cross-cultural learning experience. Please kindly find more information about the 2022 offering by clicking the “LEARN MORE” below.

China Scholarship Council (CSC)

The CSC is a government agency in China which provides scholarships to high-potential Chinese undergraduate and graduate students for study abroad. Since 2013, we have welcomed 48 CSC undergraduate visiting students, from Nanjing Forestry University (25), Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (18), and Beijing Forestry University (5). In 2016, we have 12 students from our partnering universities. For senior students, the opportunity to meet with professors who may potentially become supervisors for their graduate education is extremely valuable. In addition, the Faculty has also hosted several CSC-funded PhD students.

Go Global

We have been working closely with our partner universities, such as BFU, NFU, and National Taiwan University (NTU), to provide exchange opportunities for our undergraduate students. All three universities offer summer field schools, as well as long-term exchange programs. For example, “Exploring forestry and conservation in China”, a four-week intensive program, is offered through the UBC Faculty of Forestry in partnership with NFU. This program contains two UBC courses that provide opportunities for students to examine current developments in Chinese forestry, the forest products sector, and conservation through a series of indoor lectures, field trips to nature reserves, and visits to local industries and plantation areas. From 2012 to 2014, 33 students (28 from Faculty of Forestry, 2 from Faculty of Science, 3 from Faculty of Arts) traveled to China as part of this summer group study program. Most participants were enrolled in the Natural Resources Conservation program in the Global Perspectives stream. Several students were motivated to apply for graduate school, internships, or jobs at well-known universities or international organizations in order to continue pursuing their career in forestry, conservation, and sustainability fields. This year, we have also signed student mobility agreements with Vietnam National Forestry University and Bogor Agriculture University.
