The Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet) Visit

September 25, 2017

A visitation led by Mr. Shucong Zhao, the Chair of APFNet Board of Directors, and Dr. De Lu, Executive Director of APFNet, arrived to further strengthen partnership with UBC.  Since 2010, UBC Forestry has worked collectively with APFNet to promote sustainable forest management in the field of forest education development, climate change research, Sustainable Forest Management online program and professional capacity building, etc. During this visit, UBC and APFNet intended to advance the mutual cooperation in the North and South America.


IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress

September 19-20, 2017

The Asia Pacific Forestry Education Coordination Mechanism (AP-FECM) attended the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) 125th Anniversary Congress in Freiburg, Germany to host a Steering Committee Meeting and the Scientific Session 301-Enhancing forest education through regional cooperation. The main goals of these two events are to strengthen regional collaboration in promoting forest education, expand the AP-FECM’s global networks, as well as to showcase the report on Higher Forest Education in Asia Pacific as part of the AP-FECM initiatives that was made possible by the generous support of APFNet. The conference also ignited interests in the AP-FECM initiatives, especially garnering a lot of buzz with the SFM online courses.

AP-FECM suggested some tangible actions that could be taken regionally and globally to address some of the issues that forest education is facing globally. With some key members of AP-FECM showcasing some collaborative examples among universities, there is a hopeful note that more future collaboration could blossom.


State Forestry Administration and Chinese Academy of Forestry Visit

July 24, 2017

On July 24th, 2017, a group from the SFA, and CAF including: Dr. Huanliang Wang, Dr. Yuemi Gong, and Dr. Wenjun Ma visited UBC. They explored the intellectual property protection of BC’s forestry sector, including new tree/plant species, non-timber forest products, and wood products. As well as, the group visited UBC Botanical Gardens to learn about the introduction of new species, and an overview of the plant conservation and plant protection in the garden.

 

 

 

 

 


APFNet Group Training

July 3-9, 2017

From July 3rd to July 9th of 2017, a group training was held for a delegation from China. The group was be led by Mr. Shuqing Feng, Deputy Director General , Department of Forest Resources Management, State Forestry Administration of China. The rest of the 10 group members were directors from various organizations, including the State Forestry Administration of China, the Ministry of Finance, the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet), the Forestry Bureau of InnerMongolia Autonomous Region, etc. The group training was hosted by the UBC Faculty of Forestry and the APFNet, focusing on sustainable forest management, state-owned forest resources management, forestry and climate change and park management through presentations, workshops and field trips.=


BFU Recruitment Information Session

July 5, 2017

This was a recruitment sessions held for the Beijing Advances Innovation Centre For Tree Breeding and Molecular Design. The Beijing Forestry University (BFU) is one of the key national universities directly under the Ministry of Education in China and is the top 1 forestry university in China. BFU was established as a consolidated university in 1952, with forestry, biology and forestry engineering as its leading disciplines. It has the top colleges in forestry, landscape architecture, biological science and technology, soil and water conservation, and material science and technology (wood science).
